London Borough of Redbridge, WOODFORD WELLS, Medicinal wells
The wells at Woodford at one time enjoyed a certain amount of fame. Philip Morant, in his History of Essex, published in 1768, said “Woodford Wells were formerly in repute as purgative and good for many illnesses”. They have given their name to the parish in which they are situated and the ‘Horse and Well’ public house on the High Road is also another reminder of their former existence.

They have given their name to the parish in which they are situated and the ‘Horse and Well’ public house on the High Road is also another reminder of their former existence.
Unfortunately it is difficult nowadays to identify the site of the wells. Christy and Thresh in their book A History of the Mineral Waters and Medicinal Springs of Essex (1910) give several possible locations but do not reach any conclusions. According to the geological map the water in question most likely came from the junction of the Woodford Gravel and the impervious London Clay beneath.
