London Borough of Redbridge, WANSTEAD, Riverbank exposure of Thames gravels

In 1915, a paper in the Essex Naturalist recorded that “near the south-east corner of Wanstead Park, the River Roding has cut through the Thames terrace gravels and a small natural section is exposed from which small Palaeolithic flakes have been obtained”.

The exact whereabouts of this exposure is not known but it is likely still to exist. If it does it will be the only known natural exposure of terrace gravel in East London.
