On the edge of the lake in Wanstead Park is the ruin of a remarkable grotto. Built in the grounds of Wanstead House in the middle of the 18th century it consisted of a domed chamber with a boat house beneath. The walls were covered with shells and crystals of various minerals and many rock types were represented in the structure. The building was seriously damaged by fire in 1884 and has been derelict ever since. Much geological interest may still survive in the ruins. It is currently fenced off with no public access.
