Since the separation of L. psammophilus from L. alienus the distribution nationally of each species remains unclear. Seifert (1992) describes L. psammophilus as associated with sandy grasslands and this appears true in Essex where both species are rare. L. psammophilus has been identified from a few sandy habitats but L. alienus s.s. has only been recorded from two sites, one chalk grassland and the other dry south-facing coastal grassland. L. psammophilus has not been found in old sand pits or other recently disturbed sandy habitats and is may be vulnerable to the loss and degradation of unimproved habitats. The ant has been found in Essex in thermophilic conditions on dune and sparsely vegetated sandy soil and heathland (Harvey 1998). References
