THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB. 279
Mr. Thompson reported a yield of 18 lichens, a result which he thought
good having regard to the nearness of the Forest to London with its smoke-
drift : the forms met with were interesting, some of them more characteris-
tic of higher altitudes and consequently less well developed here than
those from localities more favourable to the growth of these fastidious
plants ; he instanced Cladina sylvatica, Cladonia digitata, Cetraria glauca
and C. aculeata, which had been seen during the day.
Mr. Scourfield remarked on his difficulty in making a report on algae,
owing to their small, even microscopic, size.—He, however, enumerated
such forms as Hormidium, which grows on level, open ground, Zygogonium,
Pleurococcus on tree-trunks, various desmids, as Closterium and Micras-
terias, and Volvox, all of which had been found that day.
A vote of thanks to the several Conductors closed the proceedings and
the party made its way through the darkened Forest back to Loughton or
Chingford, homeward bound.
