Exhibitions 1974.
Three shows stand out this year; The Havering Festival
Show in Mid-June lasted four days, five if one includes
the day setting up. Our 18' x 18' stand featured a small
badger sett complete with stuffed badger, and a hedgehog
survey during which over 500 hedgehog sightings were
reported along with much information on foxes and other
wildlife in Havering,
In Mid-July the Dagenham Town Show proved wet with problems
of keeping the stand dry in a leaking tent. Arriving the
evening before the stand building team found our section
of the tent (30') not yet ready. But before long our back-
boards were up, our tabling and a now venture - a pond with
stuffed mammals and birds around the bank, containing newts
and a toad by courtesy of Andrew Barrow, Again a hedgehog
survey and a geological section supervised by Florrie Caldwell.
Mrs. Phillips and David Scott attempted to construct a stand
on Writtle Green during Writtle Fete, but wet weather
curtailed the venture.
The Ingatestone Show soon after, was perhaps our best. Here
our central position in the tent allowed us to build our pond
with suitable wildlife, with numerous stuffed animals around.
Sheets duplicated by Veronica Smith were used to teach children
the natural history of ponds.
Special thanks to Kevin Byrne for making a pond, to Andrew
Barrow and Veronica Smith for stocking it, to the Dark family
and the Cauldwells for extensive assistance, similarly to
Linda, Michael and Mrs. Daniels, Sylvia Harrison and all those
others who joined in the fun. Also to the Chelmsford Museum
for the loan of specimens,
Ron Allen,
