Fallow deer were confined to the west and north of the country, with the
exception of a small area to the north-west of Clacton-on-Sea. There were only
occasional records of fallow occurring south of the London-Colchester road, the
A12. The distribution of the deer can be considered in the following eight
groups, some of which merge with others:
(i) Epping Forest
(ii) Navestockside
(iii) Mill Green
(iv) Roxwell
(v) Hatfield Forest
(vi) Strethall
(vii) Markshall
(viii) Clacton-on-Sea
These 'groups' of fallow deer are purely artificial and have no biological
significance: the term is used solely as an aid in describing the distribution of
fallow in Essex. Similarly, references to deer ranging over an area should not be
