Where to watch Wildlife in Thurrock The sites listed below are probably the best areas for observing wildlife in and around Thurrock and are regular venues for Society field trips. Details of access are given where necessary. Running Water Woods TQ 565825 This is an area of coppiced woodland, interspersed with arable land, hedgerows, streams and ponds, north of Belhus Park. It is a public open space and holds a varied bird and plant life including a fine display of bluebells in the spring. A large number of mature trees remain as remnants of the old Belhus Estate, particularly near the park and golf course. The resident bird population includes all three species of woodpecker, with good numbers of warblers during the summer and large finch flocks in winter. Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) and drooping sedge (Carex pendula) can be found in the damp areas. Access is via Belhus Park or the main entrance near Romford Lodge, Aveley. 9
