vi PREFACE. long ago, but has been delayed by the want of a Map of the Forest of Waltham, on the same large scale as that of the Forest of Hainault, the soil of which is the property of the Crown. This Map the Commissioners have obligingly lent him. That of Waltham he has nearly accom- plished by his own trouble and the kind assist- ance of the Parishes on or contiguous to the Forest. A small accommodation from the Commissioners of Woods and Forests, and the Mapping Department of the Ordnance, would enable him to perfect his survey sufficiently to enable him to point out spots of Forest Land which may be enclosed free from those incon- veniences which are erroneously apprehended. But, understanding that their lordships have in contemplation to survey all the parishes in these Forests, and in their vicinity, he shall be much better satisfied to be relieved from this trouble, with a certainty of the work being better done. He confesses that this unavoidable delay has given him no concern; on the contrary, he con- siders it an advantage to the cause in which he is engaged, that those who are inclined to
