employment and relief of the labouring poor, to
which your lordships have kindly paid so much
attention, will be much diminished if the Deer
continue on these Forests; for in the various
places selected, very high and expensive fences
will be necessary to secure the crops from these
ravenous and destructive animals. His Majesty
would, of course, be entitled to an equivalent
for the vert of these extensive Forests.
And now, my Lords, I must entreat your
lordships' forgiveness for the liberty I have taken
to address your lordships, in language, which you
may perhaps, think too free and strong. But I
have used it, because I wish well to my country
and to its government, being convinced, that
nothing is so likely to render the great population
of it happy and content, as the giving them an
interest in the soil, and encouraging their industry
in the manner proposed.
