APPENDIX. 69 IX. Whenever the Committee shall be dissatisfied with the conduct of the Occupant or the cultivation of the Land, they may give him notice to quit, but he must be paid for his labour on Land prepared for a crop, and also the value of the crop. The notice must be given one month before the 29th of September. X. No Work to be done on the Sabbath. No. 8. Swan River. It was my intention to give a full account of the failure of the expedition to the Swan River, and the great distress in which 2,000 emigrants were involved; but, as I find that there are two accounts given of that expedition, which differ materially from each other, I will only recommend it to those who are inclined to leave their native country, to be on their guard, not to be deluded by false hopes and assurances. Two things are certain, that the chief person to whom a large quantity of land was granted, is either returned or about to return,, being very much disappointed in what he found in the country bordering on the Swan River— The other certainty is, that many other persons have met with the same failure and disappointment, both in the North and South, and that the project of emigration is both dangerous and doubtful, whereas the comfort and happiness of a poor man, cultivating a small portion of land for the enjoyment of himself and family, are certain and direct.
