It was centred in Colchester but was felt over other parts of the country as well as in Belgium and France. There were no fatalities or serious injuries hut over 1,200 buildings in Essex were damaged. The earthquake was probably due to movement along a fault in the ancient Palaeozoic rocks under Essex, which would have affected the overlying cover of Cretaceous and Tertiary strata. http://www.essexwt.org.uk/Geology/earthquake.htm 44 Archives & Special Collections, Imperial College London, Meldola Papers, MLDA02030 45 Archives & Special Collections, Imperial College London, Meldola Papers, MLDA02031 46 Buxton, Edward North (1840-1924) Politician Author.
