Desmoulin's Whorl Snail Vertigo moulinsiana (Dupuy) in Essex ADRIAN KNOWLES EECOS, Essex Wildlife Trust, Abbotts Hall Farm, Great Wigborough, Essex, COS 7RZ Abstract The current status of Desmoulin's Whorl Snail (Vertigo moulinsiana) is reviewed. The results of a limited survey for this species along the Essex/Hertfordshire Border are discussed, presenting a new locality for this species within Essex. Introduction Essex Ecology Services Ltd (EECOS) is the wholly-owned wildlife consultancy of the Essex Wildlife Trust. This paper is presented as an example of the work of EECOS that furthers our knowledge of the fauna and flora of the county and which, through its commercial contract delivery, generates additional financial income for the Trust. It is also of note than an Essex Wildlife Trust reserve, at Sawbridgeworth Marsh, is one of the most significant sites for this species in the area. This proj cct was financially supported by the Environment Agency and the Essex Biodiversity Project, to whom our thanks are due. Vertigo moulinsiana is a national and local Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and is listed under Annex II of the European Union Habitats Directive. It is also in the British Red Data Book (Bratton, 1991) as "Rare" (RDB3). In recent times its Watsonian Essex distribution has centred on three localities along the north Essex/Hertfordshire border: 1 Sawbridgeworth Marsh SSSI and Essex Wildlife Trust reserve, although largely in Hertfordshire. The small strip that lies in Essex supports marginal habitats that are not thought to be favoured by V. moulinsiana; 2 Thorley Flood Pound SSSI, formerly in Essex but transferred to Hertfordshire by a county boundary change in 1992; 3 Little Hallingbury Marsh SSSI, Essex. This is, then, the only significant site known to actually support V. moulinsiana, within the modem county of Essex, although a very few specimens may lie undiscovered within the Essex section of Sawbridgeworth Marsh.
