The waxcap fungi of Essex Hygrocybe chlorophana (=Hygrophorus chlorophanus) (=Hygrocybe flavescens) Golden Waxcap It is a medium sized, yellow toadstool with narrowly attached, pale yellow gills. Hygrocybe glutinipes var. glutinipes {^Hygrocybe citrina var. glutinipes) Glutinous Waxcap A small, yellow waxcap with a slimy stalk and cap. The gills are broadly attached to the stalk or may run down it a little. The stalk is glassy or transparent. One of the locations is a deciduous wood. 6 GS; 80 EWT Hygrocybe intermedia Fibrous Waxcap This waxcap is medium to large in size. The cap is orange to red in colour, and dry with radial fibres and a centre covered in tiny scales. The stalk is thick and covered in longitudinal, red fibres on a yellow background. 28 MG; 29 MG Hygrocybe persistens var. persistens (=Hygrocybe langei) Persistent Waxcap A medium-sized, conical, yellow toadstool with free or narrowly attached gills. Hygrocybe persistens var. konradii forma subglobispora (=Hygrocybe subglobispora) This waxcap is similar to the previous one, but with most of the spores broadly ellipsoid to subglobose. It is a distinct variety which has been recorded for several years in Willingale churchyard. 16 ADB. Hygrocybe conica var. conica (=Hygrophorus conicus) (=Hygrocybe nigrescens) Blackening Waxcap This unmistakable species has a conical cap, which turns black on ageing or when handled.
