Brief description of site: Disused gravel pit in glacial gravel. A former geological SSSI.

----------------------------------------

Details

Bartlow Gravel Pit was a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) until it was denotified under Natural England's Geological Conservation Review in the late 1980s. Since then the site has deteoriorated and very little gravel can now be seen. The original gravel face was in excess of 6 metres in depth but is now a steep, wooded slope. The glacial gravel contains numerous fossils of Jurassic age derived from the Anglian boulder clay (till).

Whitaker et al. (1878) provides a description of a large pit just west of Bartlow Station which is almost certainly this pit. He states that it showed 40 feet of fine, chalky gravel, iron stained and in pipes at the top, with many thin bands of sand and loam in the central part, then a dark line (?manganese) and chalky gravel below.

The pit is on private land with no public access.
