Bocking Church Street Mammoth Finds

Bocking has had more than its fair share of prehistoric discoveries. Whitaker et al. (1878) records a mammoth tooth as being found in a pit dug in Blackwater terrace gravel. The exact location of the pit is uncertain but according to Ellison and Lake (1986) it may have been at Kings Bridge (TL 7590 2545).

There are also other records of mammoth fossils turning up in this area. Wright (1918) records the finding of an 'elephant tooth' while digging a saw pit at Church Street, Bocking, and Catley (1960) records the finding of two mammoth teeth and jaw fragments in 1956 while widening the river bed at Courtaulds factory. The latter specimens are now in Braintree Museum.
