Site category: Glacial deposit or feature Site name: Howe Lane Sand Pit, Great Sampford Grid reference: TL 6410 3608 Brief description of site: Disused pit to the north of the village. The pit exposes Kesgrave Sands and Gravels, glacial sand and gravel, soil horizons and chalky boulder clay (till). The sediments are contorted probably due to the pressure of ice from the north. Below the floor of the pit up to 5 metres of Red Crag is present. The 5 metre high section at the north end of the pit was cleared by the British Geological survey in 1980. It was still fairly clear of vegetation in 1997. A description of the pit, together with a sketch of the north face is given in the Great Dunmow Geological Survey Memoir (Lake & Wilson 1990).
