Site category: London Clay, Claygate or Bagshot Beds

Site name: Northey Island foreshore

Grid reference: TL 874 059 (approx)

Brief description of site:

London Clay fossils can be found on the foreshore at low tide. Stems of the fossil crinoid (sea lily) Isselicrinus subbasaltiformis occur in abundance (George & Vincent 1976).

The island can only be reached at low tide by a causeway from the mainland. The island itself is a National Trust reserve (accessible with a permit in advance) but fossils can be freely collected from the foreshore at low tide.
