Parsonage Farm Boulders, HENHAM, Uttlesford District, TL544285, General geological site

show OS map

Site category: Boulders - other types

Site name: Parsonage Farm Boulders

Grid reference: TL 544285

Brief description of site:

Near the entrance to Parsonage Farm, in front of the old stables, is a splendid pavement of erratic cobbles. Rock types include quartzite, puddingstone and some unusual igneous rocks.

Immediately in front of the stables is a sarsen (110cm x 40cm x 40cm in size) which is a typical example of an erratic boulder put to use as a mounting block. Similar mounting blocks can be seen in farmyards in many places in north Essex. Nearby is a boulder of Millstone Grit and, in the front garden of the farmhouse, another large sarsen.

All these stones are on private land and permission to visit should be obtained from the farm.
