Magdalen Wood (Remains of), TM015270

show OS map

Status: Other/unknown (specify in notes)
Access:

Summary: This woodland is all that remains of a larger area which was bordered in the west by Porters Brook, now piped, and to the east by St John's Rd. Much of the old wood was developed as housing in the 1970/80's

Description: The site is mainly made up of mature oak and sweet chestnut with one or two hollies. The ground cover consists of bramble, ivy, and rough grass and there are some hawthorns around the perimeter.Bluebells hang on despite the pressures on the woodland. Children play in the wood, there is a playground on the southern side and the many footspaths criss-crossing the wood are used by walkers, people exercising dogs and people crossing the estate. Signs of wear and tear on the woodland floor are all too obvious

Reason for interest: The remnants of ancient woodland in an area of intense housing developement.

Comment: Stag beetles can be seen in flight around the wood, at the appropriate time of year and with the right weather conditions. They are possibly breeding in tree stumps within the wood, although this is not proven. Apparently the gardens around the southern end of the wood are frequently visited by this Stags.
