Summary: Best surviving heathland in Essex, an outlier of the 18th century Heath and a remnant of a much larger vast tract to be found in the 15th century. The heath has suffered from succession to scrub and woodland, but recent efforts have returned more areas to open heath. Description: Reason for interest: Survey in 1984 identified a rich spider fauna, but otherwise relatively little is known of its invertebrate importance. The heath is also important for its plants. Comment: There are currently plans to introduce grazing at the heath. This may not be the all encompassing solution it initially seems, and it may be that better solutions could be found. |
