Essex Red Data List

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ORIGINAL ESSEX RED DATA LIST DATES FROM 2002 AND ONLY A RELATIVELY SMALL NUMBER OF UPDATES HAVE BEEN MADE SINCE THEN. THE INFORMATION GIVEN MAY THEREFORE BE NEARLY 20 YEARS OLD.

This list (last updated on 25/11/2020 and on 07/03/2023 - changes can be viewed here) was produced as an on-line resource for English Nature (Colchester Office) in 2002 by P.R. Harvey on behalf of the Essex Field Club, collating the work done for each group by County Recorders, as well as other naturalists in the county. The draft list was subject to an extensive consultation period before being made available.

English Nature

The need for such a list was the result of discussions between English Nature, the Essex Field Club and the Essex Biodiversity Partnership. It is hoped that the list will be an important compilation of Essex information, and one which will help inform and better enable biodiversity and planning decisions within the county. It is not intended that the list should be fixed for all time, but that changes can be made as necessary to keep it up to date and relevant to changes on the ground in Essex.

This Essex Red Data list is an update on the consultation draft that takes account of feedback received. New data on plants are included for consultation, for those species not on the National Red Data or BSBI Scarce lists that are nevertheless only present in a handful of sites in Essex, or are declining so rapidly that they are likely to fall into this category within a couple of decades.

Any comments on species included, suggestions for additional species rare and/or threatened in a county context and any other feedback should be sent to Peter Harvey at 32 Lodge Lane, Grays, Essex RM16 2YP and the relevant County Recorder.

New data was included for consultation by the end of December 2002, on plants not on the National Red Data or BSBI Scarce lists that are nevertheless only present in a handful of sites in Essex, or are declining so rapidly that they are likely to fall into this category within a couple of decades. The aim is to also to provide in the future a full species list with associated habitat codes to allow sorting by habitat. This should help focus habitat biodiversity action plans on associated species of conservation concern. This provision will be made available when all the habitat data is available.

Further changes will take place. A second phase of Essex Red Data flies will be put to consultation when new national reviews become available. It is hoped that information on groups not yet covered will become available. It is also hoped that more groups will have associated habitat codings completed, so that the list of species which can be sorted by habitat will become more comprehensive.

Extra text detail and illustrations can also be added when they become available, and the future publication of an Essex Red Data book remains a possibility, if funding becomes available.
