Primarily a butterfly survey of the new Woodland Trust extension areas to the east (TQ495943 & TQ492938) but will form this into general field meeting if anyone is interested, including to the SSSI ancient woodland. Potentially a lot of ground to cover. The whole area is 192Ha. Of this, the SSSI area is 113ha. Sat May 25th 2024 Time and date TBCFind routeCauseway End, Felsted. Private nature reserve. TL 68327 19177 created the reserve 25 years ago from 4 agricultural fields and it now comprises spring meadow, summer meadow, woodland plantation (2000 trees), ponds and scrub/grass areas. There are badgers on the site in the hedge line. 120 orchard trees which pre-date its use as a reserve, they date from when it was organic veg growing. 4 fields, 17ha, just south of Causeway End. Park on driveway to Glandfields farmhouse opposite site (TL68181912), with pond in front. Overflow parking next door Local Hospice Lottery, CM6 3LT.Rob Smith. Mon May 27th 2024 10:30-15:00Find routeCarver Barracks, Debden. This is a large tract of calcareous grassland which always seems to bring up surprising species. There are planted copses and an ancient wet woodland as well as a tract of heathland, water bodies and scrub. Please wear suitable clothing. the Met Office have a recording station at Elder Street, Wimbish and can be accessed via their app and website. Bring packed lunch. There are picnic tables and a compostable toilet in the Woodland Walk. Meet at the layby entrance for Rowney Woods TL56703439 Fiona Hutchins, email fiona.77h@hotmail.com to register interest

Turn down South House Chase, a discreet lane opposite the bus stop on Mundon Road (TL85980537) Meeting at the causeway car park (TL86810561) around 10-10.30am. Call Rob on 07585577228 if any farm gates locked. One or two dates might mean waiting for up to 30 minutes for the tide to drop. Meet at 10.30am at the bottom of Stansgate Road, by the gate just before Marconi Sailing Club at TL93190568. Directions: after leaving Steeple village, take the first left into Stansgate Road.
