Frog survey

Common Frog Copyright: Peter Harvey

The Common or European Grass Frog Rana temporaria has its stronghold in urban and suburban areas where many small garden ponds have been created. A concern on how well they are doing in these areas has lead local authorities to launch garden pond surveys, such as in Southend, to find out how many frog populations live within the Town environment. The timing of the Frogs mating activities can also show any local variation in the climate and the timing of seasons due possibly to climate change.

We would like to know what date the first frogs arrive within the pond (male frog emergence) and the date when the first clumps of spawn arrive in the pond. We would also like to know how many frogs were seen within the pond over at least three separate occasions from when the frogs first arrive to the first clumps of spawn.
