Garden spiders mature in late summer and autumn. Please note that the spider is very variable in colour. The best distinguishing feature is the cross-like marking on the abdomen.

In spring or early summer one can often find a ball or cluster of spiderlings that belong to this species or related orb web spiders. These spiderlings will then disperse and live separate lives.
