Jacksons Wood, TQ574909

show OS map

Status: Local Wildlife Site (LoWS)
Access:

Summary: Remnant ancient woodland close to M25 motorway, unmanaged.

Description: Sloping deciduous woodland, old oak and hornbeam coppice, notable for its stunning spring display of Wood Anenome and Bluebells. Also patches of Moschatel and a small brook add further interest.

Reason for interest: ancient woodland spring indicators - Wood Anenome, Bluebell and Dogs Mercury

Comment: The short section of footpath separating the wood from Tylers Shaw has Yellow Archangel, Wood Avens and violets along the margin. Due to shading, there are few conspicuous invertebrates present other than sporadic bumble bees, with only Speckled Wood butterflies noted along the footpath. Flora: Yellow Archangel, Lesser Celandine, Common Dog Violet, Wood Anemone, Bluebell, Moschatel, Dogs Mercy, Red Campion, Wood Avens, Cuckoo Pint, Goosegrass, Ground Ivy, Bramble and occasional honeysuckle on east side. 3 Primrose (03/2014) on south bank of brook nearer motorway culvert. Butcher's Broom close to western end of footpath between Tylers Shaw. Male Ferns are present along the ditch running closest and parallel with the M25, whereas Broad Buckler Fern predominates along the brook running east/west.
