Species text
Ancistrocerus nigricornis is a large black and yellow solitary wasp nesting in pre-existing cavities of many kinds. Although formerly widespread and common in southern Britain north to Yorks, the relative lack of records since 1970 indicates that the species has undergone a significant decline, and its status needs to be reconsidered (Edwards & Telfer, 2001). In Essex modern records are only known from Epping Forest, Hatfield Forest and Thorndon Park North, as well as East Tilbury in 1995. Prey are said to be caterpillars, particularly of tortricid moths.
