The rove beetle Carpelimus obesus is new to Essex. It was not found in Britain before the 1950s but is now beginning to turn up fairly widely (P. Hammond, pers. comm.), although a very local species with scattered records from East Sussex north to Mid-west Yorkshire. It has been recorded on wet mud on river and stream margins. The species may be threatened by river engineering, including dredging, level regulation by damming and flood alleviation schemes. River pollution and natural succession may be further threats.
