Species text
Chlaenius nigricornis is a widespread but local metallic copper and green ground beetle in England and Wales. It has been recorded in marshes, grazing levels, the margins of lakes and rivers, poor fen at the edges of raised mires, dried-up ponds, moorland, canal banks, parkland and in coastal habitats. It is probably predatory and is found on mud, under stones or in lush vegetation, often amongst bulrushes, sedges and reeds. Grazing, cutting or some other disturbance, on a rotational basis, may be needed to encourage early successional stages and maintain open conditions. The species is probably threatened by drainage for reasons such as agricultural improvement and development and natural succession and scrub invasion may be further threats (Hyman & Parson, 1992).
