Species text
Lionychus quadrillum is a very rare bronze black ground beetle, recently recorded from only four vice-counties, including two from central Wales (Hyman & Parsons 1992). It is often found near water or near the shore on river shingle, sand or gravel, sometimes in quite dry places. It has been found on the coast above the high-water mark, and from a saltmarsh. Shingle and sand banks tend to be mobile and rely on the free flow of river and stream systems and activities that hinder this flow should be avoided. Adjacent scrub and rank grassland is thought to be important for the species in winter and to escape late summer floods. At Colne Point the beetle would presumably move to higher ground above the high tide level. References
