Species text
The species is so far recorded in Britain only from saltmarshes in north Kent and Essex, the known distribution extending north to the Colne estuary in Essex, and east to Faversham in Kent. Recorded in Kent and Essex. In 2002 there are recent records in the county from Paglesham Creek and the Colne Estuary, and an older one from Benfleet (Kirby in Essex Red Data list). Members of the genus Neophilaenus are in general grass-feeders, and N. longiceps presumably feeds on saltmarsh grasses, although no specific hosts have been suggested. It occurs particularly in the grassier upper levels of saltmarsh and can be found in areas dominated by common saltmarsh grass Puccinellia maritima, but there is no proof of feeding by nymphs on this plant (Kirby, 1992). Grazing should not be introduced to marshes where it is not already present. References
