Remarkable occurrence in numbers at Howlands Marsh, N.Essex, confirmed by Steve Hopkin.
Species text
A speckled, dull, brown or grey woodlouse found in southern and southwest England and Wales, mainly near the coast. Its distribution is probably limited by the need for warm winters. It occurs in grassland, scrub or open woodland in grass tussocks or leaf litter. The woodlouse was recorded new to Essex in 1990 by P.R. Harvey at Howlands Marsh in two locations, TM103161 (dyke edge/grazing marsh grassland) and TM112168 (under concrete on landward side of sea wall). Its occurrence here extends the range shown in Harding & Sutton (1985) considerably. The species is unlikely to be confused with any other British species (Hopkin 1991), yet there have been no further records from other sites. It seems remarkable that the woodlouse should be confined in Essex to Howlands Marsh, where it is clearly well established and frequent in several habitats, and its occurrence warrants research.
