Species text
Although Hyman & Parsons (1992) states that the predatory ground beetle Pterostichus gracilis is widespread but local throughout Great Britain including the North East, North West, South East Scotland, South West Scotland and North East Scotland, no records north of South East Yorkshire are shown in Luff (1998) and many records are pre-1970. There are very few records in Essex. It is found at the margins of lakes, ponds and reservoirs, in fens, on riverbanks and in wet grassland, among damp, lush vegetation on soft soil or mud, and under stones. Water tables should be maintained at high levels and water bodies should be isolated from sources of eutrophication and pollution. Management should aim at maintaining open conditions and encouraging early successional stages along lake and pond edges (Hyman & Parsons, op. cit.). References
