Species text
The orb-web spider Singa hamata is rare in Essex and considered to be Essex Threatened. It is typically a spider of unmanaged rough open grassland, where there is a structural continuity throughout the year. It builds its web and nest in tall grassland and over-winters in situ. Cutting during the summer will destroy the spiders and their webs. Cutting during the autumn or winter will destroy their egg sacs, dramatically reducing population levels. References
