Species text
This status of this small red and black leaf beetle was revised from Endangered to Vulnerable by Hyman & Parsons (1992). Old records indicate that this species was formerly widespread in southern England with scattered records north to Westmorland. It has been recorded from a few localities in southern England, where it feeds on aspen in broad-leaved woodland. On the Continent the beetle has also been recorded on Italian poplar and goat willow. The larvae mine the leaves of the host-tree during the summer. Adults occur on the host-tree between May and July and again in September and October, and probably overwinter in this stage. Management should ensure open glades and ride margins cut on rotation to retain a variety of vegetation structures (Hyman & Parsons, 1992). References
