Species text
The species is recorded widely in southern England, but always restricted in most parts of its range. It has declined, particularly obviously inland, and relatively few modern colonies are known. It occurs in a variety of sandy and disturbed situations, especially landslips and cliff tops, as well as sandy heathland and grassland, coastal dunes and chalk heath. There is a close association with yellow composites (Asteraceae) and features such as hard, well-trodden paths and sandy banks (Falk, 1991). The only modern records in Essex are for a handful of sites in Thurrock, one now destroyed by development, one from an old sand pit near Colchester and Hilly Fields LNR, also in Colchester. It is host to the Nationally Scarce (Notable) cuckoo bee Nomada integra, an Essex Endangered species that may now be extinct in the county. References
