Species text
This is a widespread but very scarce snail killing fly in England and Wales, with records most numerous for East Anglia and the East Midlands. The status was revised from RDB3 (Shirt 1987). The fly's habitat is lush marginal vegetation around ponds, ditches and lakes. The larvae develop in the respiratory chamber of aquatic snails such as Lymnaea palustris or L. truncatula, selecting snails that are stranded, aestivating or otherwise exposed. Management should ensure a range of vegetaton types including ditches, ponds and their marginal vegetation. Seasonally fluctuating water levels may be of importance. (Falk, 1991). References
