Site category: Red Crag

Site name: Elsenham Quarry

Grid reference: TL 553 268

Brief description of site:

London Clay is sometimes exposed at the base of this working gravel quarry overlain by Red Crag, Chillesford Sand, Kesgrave Sands and Gravels (mostly sands), and chalky till. This is the only inland exposure of Red Crag (including the basal nodule bed). The Red Crag here does not contain fossils as they have been dissolved by percolating ground water. Access to the quarry is only available with permission from the quarry operators.
