The brickworks shown on 1876 Ordnance Survey map at the southern end of Newport yielded elephant bones (Whitaker et al. 1878). The beds exposed in the pit were described as œbrown loam, 7 feet, over light loamy sand€. David Gayler advertised as a brickmaker between 1870 and 1896 and so it is assumed that this was his brickyard. The site, which was on the west side of London Road, has now been filled with housing.
