Grave of Samuel Hazzledine Warren, LOUGHTON, Epping Forest District , TQ429969, Historical site only
Site name: Grave of Samuel Hazzledine Warren
Grid reference: TQ 429969 Brief description of site: Samuel Hazzledine Warren (1872-1958), contributed perhaps more to the study of Essex geology and Palaeolithic archaeology than any other person. He was buried in Loughton Cemetery. His grave is, appropriately for an archaeologist, covered with struck flint flakes. A commemorative blue plaque to Warren œpalaeontologist and geologist€ has been placed on his house at 49 Forest View Road, Loughton. Warren's extensive collection was partially donated to the Natural History Museum in 1936 and the remainder bequeathed to the British Museum. Much of Warrens work is still of lasting value. Eighteen of his papers are cited in the Geological Conservation Review Volume on Quaternary of the Thames (1994) by David Bridgland.
