Brief description of site:

Woodland containing disused gravel pits. The wood sits on a small patch of gravel at the junction of the rivers Crouch and Mardyke, almost at the watershed between the two streams. It is marked on the geological map as 'undifferentiated' and its origin is not known. The pits are mentioned in the 1925 Romford Geological Survey Memoir. The wood is a Local Wildlife Site.
