Site name: Low Street Pit, West Tilbury

Grid reference: TQ 672775

Brief description of site:

Low Street Pit is a disused, wooded sand and gravel pit south of Station Road between east Tilbury and West Tilbury. It is situated on a patch of Mucking Gravel, which is the down-stream equivalent of the Taplow terrace of the Thames and was laid down about 200,000 years ago. The gravel has been excavated down to the Thanet Sand below which is exposed on the floor of the pit.

The pit is private but has been designated as a Local wildlife Site.
