Site category: London Clay, Claygate or Bagshot Beds Noak Bridge road cutting Summary In 1983, road improvements at the Basildon exit of the A127 (Southend Arterial Road) revealed a small expanse of weathered, chocolate brown London Clay with a layer of septarian nodules. The nodules were notable as they contained fine crystals of barite (barium sulphate) in the cavities. Barite is not uncommon in London Clay septarian nodules (see entry for Southend Cliffs in Southend-on-Sea district) but the crystals from this site were particularly lustrous and translucent.
