Site category: Spa or spring Witham Spa (site of) Witham briefly enjoyed a period as an affluent spa town in the 18th century and was very popular with visitors who came to drink the spring water which had supposed curative properties. It is commemorated by the name of Spa Road and several houses such as Spa Place, a listed building that was built for the physician.
Christy and Thresh in their 1910 book The history of the mineral wells and medicinal springs of the county of Essex devote no less than six pages to the history of this famous spa.
