Ballingdon Hill Sand Pit (site of), BALLINGDON, Braintree District, TL863401, Historical site only
Site category: Glacial deposit or feature Ballingdon Hill Sand Pit (site of) A large pit in glacial sands was in existence here in the early 20th century. Beautiful sections in current-bedded sands, at least 40 feet (12 metres) in thickness, were then visible overlain by 5 feet (1.5 metres) of chalky boulder clay (till). The pit was visited by the Geologists' Association just before the First World War. The site appears to be alongside the Essex/Suffolk border on the Suffolk side.
