Pinchpools Chalk pit, MANUDEN, Uttlesford District, TL49202758, General geological site

show OS map  show polygon

Site category: Chalk sites

Site name: Pinchpools Chalk pit

Grid reference: TL 4920 2758

Brief description of site:

At Pinchpools is a medium size disused chalk pit. It exposed 4 metres of soft to firm white chalk with nodular flint horizons and a tabular flint band at the base. The chalk showed intense vertical fracturing. The faces are now very overgrown with chalk talus largely obscuring the sections.

In about 1996 the owner of the adjacent house cleared the trees from the floor of the pit and uses the pit as a garden. Permission from the owner is required for access.
