Site category: Glacial deposit or feature Site name: Roxwell Road 'Kettle Hole' Grid reference: TL 6835 0759 Brief description of site:
A borehole on the Roxwell Road revealed silty peat layers with shells which appear to have accumulated in a depression in the underlying boulder clay. The peat has been interpreted by the British Geological Survey as an interglacial sediment (although it has not been dated). The depression may have been caused by melting of a block of ice and therefore the sediments may represent the infilling of a 'kettle hole' 450,000 years ago.
