Skitts Hill Brickworks, BRAINTREE, Braintree District, TL765224, Historical site only
Site category: Interglacial deposit Skitts Hill Brickworks Between Duggers Lane and Skitts Hill is the site of a brickworks that was in operation at the end of the nineteenth century. Geologist W.H.Dalton, in an article on the geology of the Braintree district in the Essex Naturalist in 1890, states that a tooth of an elephant was found in the pit here and that œa careful search would probably discover other bones, shells and flint implements€.
This pit, like Hunnables pit, is situated in the valley of the River Brain. There is insufficient information for the fossil to be accurately dated but it will be at least 50,000 years old.
